NMC STUDENT DESIGNER CREATES LIMITED EDITION
TRAVERSE CITY T-SHIRTS FOR VISITOR CENTER
TRAVERSE CITY – The Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau has a new line of designer t-shirts, beach bags and other gear for sale, thanks to the talents of a local woman who created the design as her final project at Northwestern Michigan College.
The new shirts and bags feature the Bureau’s familiar “TC” logo, as well as a series of icons representing the area’s most popular attractions and activities. They were created by local resident Laurie Schutza, who designed them as her final project in her degree program in visual communications at Northwestern Michigan College.
“We went through quite a few design ideas before settling on this one,” said Schutza. “The Bureau wanted something that was both unique and celebrated Traverse City, and I loved their logo and wanted to incorporate it in my overall design. It was really a win-win situation.”
Visitor Center manager Kathee McCafferty said the new design is superior to the generic tourist shirts sold in many other locations, since it shows places and events that are uniquely evocative of the region – the tall ship Manitou, the State Theatre, the Old Mission lighthouse, the National Cherry Festival. Her hope is to sell a limited number of the items each year and create a new design every spring.
“Everybody knows someone who’s enchanted by Traverse City, and a limited-edition shirt is always a great gift item,” she said.
The shirts, which come in white, blue and gold, retail for $14.95. The sturdy canvas beach bags, also printed with Schutza’s design, retail for $10.95. They are available for sale at the Traverse City Visitor Center, along with a selection of Traverse City logo ball caps, visors, notecards and other items. The Visitor Center is located at the corner of Union Street and Grandview Parkway, and is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays.
